A thunder egg is a rock found in certain areas, and sought after by collectors. Peter Blake wants a thunder egg, but there is one thing he wants even more – his own horse. When his family moves to a new farm, he hopes for a horse, and sees a colt on a neighbouring ranch. But the farm does not yet have enough water for stock, and the family is short on money. Peter trades a jade stone from his collection for three thunder eggs. He has to put them aside until someone can be found to cut them open properly so that if there is a design, it is not ruined. Peter is sure that one of them will be worth enough money to buy his colt.
