About the author
William O Steele (1917–79) was an American author. He was born in Tennessee, where he spent much of his childhood exploring the woods around his home. He developed and maintained an interest in the history of the area, as well as its animals, who became part of his books. Steele wrote 39 books, many of which were historical adventures, including his horse story, which was based on The Pony Express. He won the Newbery Honor in 1959 for his book The Perilous Road (1958).
