Freelance is a New Forest Pony, who falls upon evil days. Judith and her mother work and work to buy Freelance from Mr Heydon, but on the eve of her birthday, just when her mother thinks they will be able to buy him, there is terrible news. Mr Heydon has sold the pony to Will Wellow, who is only interested in makinga profit out of Freelance. Judith vows that she will get Freelance back even if she has to wait until the pony’s old and of no value to anyone.
