“Lal Verney loved to go riding but she didn’t often have the chance, for her parents hadn’t much money to spare and she herself was too shy to join a club or hover hopefully round the local stables. It was lovely when Joss Merton invited her to come over each day and ride Cuffy, Joss’s lively and affectionate bay pony. Joss and Lal soon became fast friends, but then Joss was told her family were moving to a city, with no place for Cuffy.  Joss couldn’t bear to sell Cuffy. Shy as she was, Lal knew that between her friendship for Joss and affection for Cuffy, she would have no rest unless she tried to help.”
