About the author
John W Chambers (b.1933) has written several children’s books, which vary from adventure stories ( Fire Island Forfeit) to Siamese cats (Fritzi’s Winter). He has written, as far as I am aware, one horse book, The Colonel and Me. Its heroine, Gussie, loathes the idea of learning to ride.

Colonel Meslenko is a Tartar, and Gussie hates both him and the fact he is teaching her to ride. This was not how she had seen the summer go at all – she had planned a lazy summer on the beach and reading, and not having to learn to ride.
