Set during the time of the Chicago fire, this is the story of Jeff, whose Civil War veteran father is a detective in the Chicago police force. Jeff befriends a less fortunate boy, Newman Higginbotham, and helps Newman get a job as a stable boy. It looks as if this has backfired when Newman is accused of being involved in horse thefts from the stable. Jeff goes undercover to investigate.
