Francie Lou is 11 and lives on a ranch in Texas. When her aunt comes to visit, she declares that Francie Lou is too much of a tomboy, and unfortunately, her parents agree. Plans are made for her to live with a Miss Abbott in town, but an unplanned buggy race changes those plans. Francie Lou is glad to be home for the summer for the round up, and also there is the new mustang, Nita, who is to be trained. But her mother stands firm, and later Francie Lou is sent
to live with her aunt and uncle in San Antonio, who try and teach her to be a lady.
