Ryder, Chloe

About the author

Chloe Ryder is a pseudonym used by the author Julia Sykes, who also writes as Summer Waters and Syke Waters. The Princess Ponies series is the result of a collaboration between her and Jeff Norton, who has a niece who’s grown out of Dora the Explorer, but hasn’t grown out of wanting to read adventure stories. Chloe Ryder lives on a farm and has horses. Whether alter ego Julie Sykes does isn’t clear: she lives in Hampshire, though they did once live on a fish farm with 300,000 rainbow trout.

She’s written several picture books, and numerous animal-related series aimed at the younger reader.

A Magical Friend

Bloomsbury, London, 2013, 106 pp, plus 12 pp of extras, illus Jennifer Miles

Pippa pays her first visit to the magical island of Chevalia. Chevalia’s in trouble because the magical horseshoes which give it its power have gone missing. Can Pippa, and the princess pony Stardust, daughter of the King and Queen of Chevalia, find the first horseshoe?

A Dream Come True

Bloomsbury, London, 2013, 112 pp, plus 12 pp of extras, illus Jennifer Miles

Pippa’s now a bit more established on Chevalia. It’s the pony games, and Stardust’s best friend Blossom is competing. Normally Stardust would have gone to support her, but Stardust says Pippa’s her best friend now, and she doesn’t need two. Poor Blossom. Can Pippa and Stardust find another horseshoe, and sort out how they should behave to Blossom?

The Special Secret

Bloomsbury, London, June 2013, illus Jennifer Miles

It’s harvest time on Chevalia, and Pippa and Stardust head off to help with the harvest, hoping they might also find one of the missing horseshoes. Stardust however is not keen on getting her hooves dirty, which superior attitude upsets her friend Mucker, who works on the farm. Another character failing for Stardust to deal with!

A Unicorn Adventure

Bloomsbury, London, June 2013, illus Jennifer Miles

Princess Pony Honey goes into the forbidden Cloud Forest. Pippa and Stardust follow her, and find out she’s made friends with a unicorn. The unicorn tells them that there’s a magical tree in the centre of the forest, and Pippa thinks one of the missing horseshoes must be there. They have a few things to get past before they can find out: fire-breathing dragonflies, for one.

An Amazing Rescue

Bloomsbury, London, August 2013, illus Jennifer Miles

Time’s running out until the deadline of Midsummer, by which all the horseshoes have to have been found. There’s three still to go, and Pippa and Stardust head off for the Wild Forest. They find out two things: there’s an enemy in their midst, and Cinders and Princess Cloud have a bit more to them than Pippa and Stardust thought.

Best Friends Forever

Bloomsbury, London, January 2014, illus Jennifer Miles

Time really is running out now. It’s Midsummer Day, and there’s still one more golden horseshoe to find. Pippa and Princess Stardust have to journey to dangerous parts of the island, and need all their courage if they are to save Chevalia.

A Special Surprise

Bloomsbury, London, 2014, illus Jennifer Miles

The princess pony, Stardust, has come from Chevalia to visit, just in time for tomorrow’s gymkhana at the riding school. It would be a dream come true for Pippa if she won a rosette on her favourite pony, Snowdrop. But when Pippa arrives at the stables, Snowdrop and her riding school pony friends are nowhere to be found. Princess Stardust has an idea who is responsible. For the show to go on, Pippa and Stardust must return to Chevalia.

A Singing Star

Bloomsbury, London, 2014, 128 pp, illus Jennifer Miles

Pippa has a part in the school play, but she can’t remember her lines. She’s hoping she can get some tips at the Royal Pony Performance. When she gets to Chevalia, she finds that someone has stolen superstar singing pony Diva’s voice. Diva is, understandably, devastated.
