About the author

Molly Byrom wrote just one book, Jockey Silks, as far as I have been able to find out. Shirley Dallimore, a childhood friend of Molly’s, wrote to me with her memories of the author:

‘I knew Molly and her sisters, Marie, Jean, and as far as I can remember, Yvonne … Molly’s father used to bring the girls on holiday to Selsey, a small fishing village, right at he bottom of the South of England. They used to stay at a boarding house owned by a Mr and Mrs Day. Mrs Day was partially sighted. She was a friend of my late mother’s and at weekends off from school, I used to go and stay and help her out with her guests.

While Molly was down, we used to go horse riding at Percy Lees’ riding stables, which was at the top of East Street where they stayed. We mainly went riding along the sands at West Beach. I remember how excited everyone was when the book was coming up for publication. Molly was crazy about horses and at that time her favourite jockey was Doug Smith.

She emigrated from Chatsworth Rd in Cheam, Surrey, to Moonee Ponds in Melbourne, Australia, and we lost touch, but I have often thought about her and her family.’

Finding the book
Very difficult to find indeed.
