Marya Smith grew up in New York State, and was educated at Cornell University, where she studied English Literature. She lectured there, and now works as a freelance writer. She has published two young adult novels, Winter-Broken and Across the Creek. She rides, and the dustjacket of Winter-Broken describes her as riding her horse through the Illinois cornfields.
Home life is very difficult for Dawn, who has learned that silence is the best way to cope with her abusive father. She then meets Eleroy Everley, and the horse Wildfire. At last she is happy, but she still has much to go through before she emerges to hope.
