John W Chambers

John W Chambers (1933- ) has written several children’s books, which vary from adventure stories ( Fire Island Forfeit)  to Siamese cats (Fritzi’s Winter). He has written, as far as I am aware, one horse book, The Colonel and Me.  Its heroine, Gussie, loathes the idea of learning to ride.

Finding the book :  This book is easy to find in the USA. It was not printed in the UK.

Colonel Meslenko is a Tartar, and Gussie hates both him and the fact he is teaching her to ride.  This was not how
she had seen the summer go at all:  she sawy a lazy summer of the beach and reading, and not having to learn to
ride.
