Below is the blurb from Ride To Freedom: for all those, like me, who have never read the book.
An occasional pony ride at the local riding school in return for helping in the stables, the friendship of Susan (who is lucky enough to have a pony of her own), the companionship pof her dog, Brandy, and a forlorn hope of one day finding a real home and a pony of her own - these are the only consolations which brighten Lynne’s drab life at Westwood. She lives with her foster mother and foster sister, neither of whom understands or likes her, in a slummy part of town, far from the open country-side which she loves.
One day, she is amazed to find that part of her dream comes true. She sets out to realise her other hopes and becomes involved in a series of exciting and sometimes frightening adventures, including a cross-country chase on horseback.
Will Lynne ever have a home of her own? Will she find that she does belong to a family (as she has always believed) and is not an unwanted orphan? Will she reach the “Horse-lovers’ Heaven” which she and Susan used to imagine - “A marvellous place, full of lovely horses and stables and open country”?
