Simon Mahler was 17 when he died in a fall from a mare he and his mother loved.  Simon’s father has the mare destroyed,
leaving his mother distraught.  

Barbara Esstman was born in Iowa and educated at St Louis University and George Mason University.  She teaches creative writing at university level, and writes articles for publications such as the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times. Her book Night Ride Home, published in the UK under the title Mare’s Milk, has an equine background.
