Lancashire born Magdalen Nabb (1947-2007) was best known for her Maresciallo Guarnaccia series, detective novels set in Florence, where she lived from 1975 until her death.  She wrote the Josie Smith series for children, and one fantasy horse book for the younger reader:  The Enchanted Horse.   It is quite beautifully illustrated by Julek Heller.  Magdalen Nabb rode:  she did a sponsored ride in Kenya in 2006 for the Brooke Hospital, to whom royalties for The Enchanted Horse went.  She died in 2007, having suffered a stroke while out riding.

Irina is sad and lonely.  She sees a little wooden horse in a junk shop window.  She knows he feels the
same way she does, but what she doesn’t know is that he is really an enchanted horse.
